Treasure and Trust: Lightening Your Pack | Walking the Narrow Path (Part 5)

Matthew 6:19–34

A traveler on a long journey knows that every extra pound in their pack matters. If you carry too much, you’ll tire out before the destination. On the “Wide Road,” the world encourages us to pack as much as possible—more money, more possessions, more status. But on the Narrow Path, Jesus tells us to lighten the load.

In the second half of Matthew 6, Jesus addresses the two biggest things that weigh down a traveler: Greed and Worry.

Where is Your Treasure?

Jesus isn’t just talking about your bank account; He’s talking about your heart’s anchor. He tells us not to lay up treasures on earth where moths eat and thieves break in. Why? Because earthly treasure is insecure.

If your happiness is tied to things that can be lost, you will spend your whole journey in fear. But if you store your treasure in Heaven—through acts of love, service, and obedience—your heart stays fixed on the destination, not the baggage.

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

The Cure for the Anxious Traveler

Perhaps the most famous part of this path is where Jesus tells us: “Take no thought for your life.” It’s easy to worry about the “what ifs.” What if I don’t have enough? What if the road gets too hard? Jesus points the traveler to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. They don’t toil or spin, yet the Father feeds and clothes them.

Worrying doesn’t add a single hour to your life; it only steals the strength you need for today’s steps.

The Traveler’s Priority

Jesus gives us the ultimate compass for the Narrow Way in verse 33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

When you stop worrying about the “things” and start focusing on the King, the pack feels lighter. You realize you aren’t walking this path alone—you are being provided for by the One who owns the mountain.

Reflection for the Road: What are you carrying today that is making you tired? Is it a desire for more “stuff,” or a fear of the future? Lay it down. Seek the Kingdom first, and trust the Father for the rest.
