Do You Carry the Flavor of Heaven? | Walking the Narrow Path (Part 2)
Matthew 5:13–16
If you joined me for Part 1, we looked at the “Heart of the Traveler”—those internal shifts like humility and mercy that change who we are. But here is the thing about the Narrow Path: it is not a secret journey.
Once your heart begins to change, your life starts to leak. You cannot walk this road and remain invisible. Jesus made this clear when He looked at His disciples and gave them two distinct identities: Salt and Light.
You Are the Preservative (Salt)
In the ancient world, salt wasn’t just for taste; it was a lifeline. Without refrigeration, meat would rot. Salt was the only thing standing between a meal and total decay.
When Jesus calls you the “salt of the earth,” He is saying that your presence in your office, your family, and your city is what slows down the “rot.”
- The Flavor: Do people feel a sense of hope or “heavenly flavor” when they talk to you?
- The Preservation: Does your integrity make it harder for corruption to thrive around you?
The Warning: If salt loses its saltiness, it’s useless. If we live exactly like those on the Wide Road—complaining, compromising, and chasing the same shadows—we lose our influence. Don’t let the world dilute your spirit.
You Are the Signal (Light)
Light is unique because it doesn’t have to argue with darkness. It doesn’t scream or shout; it simply is. When you turn on a lamp, the darkness has no choice but to leave.
As a traveler on the Narrow Path, you are a walking signal fire.
- No Hiding: A city on a hill can’t be hidden. If you are truly following Christ, people will notice.
- The Purpose: We don’t shine so people can see us; we shine so they can see the Path and the Father who built it.
A Question for the Road
The “Wide Road” will constantly try to dim your glow. It will tell you to “blend in” so you don’t make others uncomfortable. It will try to dampen your “saltiness” through fear of being different.
My friend, are you diluting your life to fit in with the crowd?
A traveler who is just like the world has no way of changing the world. Today, I want to challenge you: don’t hide your lamp under a bowl. Be salty. Be bright. Let the world see that there is a different—and better—way to live.
Next Step:
Think of one “dark” situation you are facing this week (a difficult coworker, a family conflict, a personal struggle). How can you be “Light” in that specific spot without saying a single word?
Coming next in Part 3: We will look at “The Higher Standard” and why the Narrow Path requires more than just following the rules.
